Carbs – They’re Good Mood Food

Carbs

We’re about to get real when it comes to carbohydrates. We like them. We’re going to eat them. And you know what? It’s going to be OK.

Sure, there are camps out there willing to trick us into believing carbohydrates are the devil. Truth?

People who eat very low carb diets (or – gasp – no carbs) are usually very unhappy.

Actually, they’re not just unhappy – sometimes they’re downright moody. They also tend to have higher levels of stress and feelings of sadness or depression. That concept alone is a bit depressing, isn’t it?

Did you know that carbs are the building blocks for happy brain chemicals?

Yup, it’s true. Now, you can’t have just any old carb. Those satisfying, brain-chemical-boosting nuggets of goodness need to be complex carbs, not simple carbs. That means you need to ditch the bag of jelly beans for a handful of your favorite whole grain cereal. Add a little bit of protein and you’ll not only stay on the happy train, but you will feel more satisfied for a longer period of time as well.

Need some ideas? Try a few of these:

Yogurt with whole grain oats
Hummus with veggies and/or whole grain crackers or pretzels
Celery and peanut butter
Peanut butter energy balls (there are tons of recipes online)

You have our blessing. Go forth and eat (healthy) carbs!

What food makes you feel happier? Carbs make us happy!!!
